Come celebrate 5 years of VIA Metropolitan Transit’s “Poetry on the Move” contest with a poetry and art exhibit and a celebratory book.

With the walls of Bihl Haus Arts chock full of poetry and art, we invite guests of all ages to “chalk” short poems on our wall in celebration of the opening of "Cinco de VIA," five years of promoting poetry and the visual arts in a transit setting. The evening includes poolside music by duo Toro Flores on marimba and Michael Garza on Flamenco guitar, plus a selection of antojitos (appetizers) and sangria.

Each year, VIA’s “Poetry on the Move” contest is open to anyone over 18 years of age in Central and South Texas. The winning poetry, juried by a panel of prominent San Antonio poets, including Texas Poet Laureate Rosemary Catacalos, is displayed on VIA buses and vans during National Poetry Month each April. The poetry display also includes selected works from the City of San Antonio Public Library’s Young Pegasus program. The top poems are illustrated with images created by participants in area teen youth art programs. As part of the celebration and exhibit, VIA has compiled a book of the winning poems and artwork. Poets and artists featured in the book will receive a free copy; additional copies ($10) are available at the opening.

The “Cinco de VIA” exhibit features all 100 “Poetry on the Move” placards of juried poems and artworks displayed on VIA buses during poetry month in April over the past five years. Included are poems by Carmen Tafolla, Mobi Warren, Cyra Dumitru and Tom Keene, among others, as well as poems by winners of the San Antonio Public Library’s annual “Young Pegasus” competition. Accompanying juried illustrations were produced by San Antonio teens enrolled in youth art programs across the City, including Henry Ford Academy, Say Si, San Anto Cultural Arts, J.T. Brackenridge High School, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and Edgewood Fine Arts Academy; in addition literary jurors were invited to submit a poem and select an illustration by a local artist to accompany it (see Carmen Tafolla/Thelma Muraida example, attached). Many of the poets and young artists will be on hand at the opening reception to autograph copies of the “Cinco de VIA” book. Past poetry jurors have included Pablo Miguel Martinez, Carol Coffee Reposa, Vincent Toro, Martha K. Grant, Ignacio Magaloni and Ben Tremillo. The project was brought to VIA and has been overseen for all five years by San Antonio poet and educator Jim LaVilla-Havelin.

The Opening Reception is September 26, 2014, 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Bihl Haus Arts (2803 Fredericksburg Road, inside the gates of Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments). The exhibition continues through October 4. Gallery hours are Fridays and Saturdays, 1-4 pm, or by appointment. The “Cinco de VIA” book ($10) will be available for purchase at Bihl Haus during the opening, and thereafter at The Twig (306 Pearl Pkwy #106).
