Sakura | Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral

Three outstanding international artists and members of The Silk Road Ensemble will come together for Sakura, the Japanese term for Cherry Blossom! Japanese Koto & Shamisen player and songwriter Sumie (Sumi-é) Kaneko has been recognized as a pioneer of uniquely chromatic instrumentation. Kaoru Watanabe is a New York based composer and musician who specializes in the Japanese shinobue flutes and taiko drums.  Percussionist/composer/arranger Shane Shanahan has combined his studies of drumming traditions from around the world with his background in jazz, rock and Western music to create his own unique style. The trio are deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, and at the same time, are virtuosos in Western classical, jazz and world music. The program will include selections of traditional Japanese music and it's modern journey around the world.
