2nd Performance: Las Estrellas de Ayer, Las Tesoros de Hoy: CD Release + Concert
February 7, 2016
Due to popular demand, The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center presents a second performance of Las Estrellas de Ayer, Las Tesoros de Hoy [The Stars of Yesteryear, the Treasures of Today] CD release and concert on Sunday, February 7, 2016. Las Tesoros de San Antonio were four mujeres who were each individually renowned performers in the 1940s, 50s, and/or 60s. All grew up in the Westside of San Antonio and enjoyed incredible singing careers regionally, nationally and internationally. The Esperanza brought these four musical tesoros (treasures) out of retirement to sing and perform again in 2006.
Las Tesoros include Rita “La Calandria” Vidaurri, Beatriz “La Paloma del Norte” Llamas, Janet Cortez “Perla Tapatía” and Blanca “Blanquita Rosa” Rodriguez – four strong mujeres who helped build the foundations for San Antonio’s rich musical cultura in spite of the male dominated music industry and patriarchal families they came from. Even though they had their own musical trajectories, these women inspired and supported each other.
The CD, "Las Tesoros de San Antonio: Las Estrellas de Ayer," features original rancheras and boleros compiled from early recordings of those four mujeres. The CD is dedicated to Perla Tapatía, an original member of Las Tesoros who died on August 24, 2014. The Esperanza, which produced this CD featuring the vintage voices of Las Tesoros, has also produced CDs of the current voices of Rita Vidaurri and Beatriz Llamas. There will be an opportunity to buy the CD and have the mujeres sign CDs and other mementos. The CD will be sold for $15.
Tickets will be sold at the door for $5. Seating is first come first served.
There will also be an exhibit that can be viewed on the first floor.
