2016 Native Film Series: "Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner"
March 29, 2016
The Briscoe Western Art Museum’s 2016 Native Film Series showcases three films that feature diverse Native voices, perspectives and stories. All the films are directed, written, or produced by and/or star Native Americans.
A contemporary tale of life on the reservation, an ancient Inuit legend, and a familial road movie all represent important and unique entries into both Native American and Independent cinema. The films were curated by actor and artist Michael Horse (Yaqui), who will be delivering the Briscoe Museum’s Distinguished Lecture in April 2016 about the evolving role and representation of Native Americans in popular media.
Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001/172 min./ Rated R)
Based on an ancient Inuit legend and set against the backdrop of the Canadian arctic, a tribal chief’s son plots revenge against the man who steals the heart of the woman he was to marry, causing a rupture within the community.
