    Cuerpo Cubano/Cuban Body Opening Reception

“Cuerpo Cubano/Cuban Body” features the works of six artists – painters Adrian Rumbaut and Elias Acosta, architects Camilo Villalvilla and Vladimir Rodriguez, and photographers Angel Pena and Omar G. Valenti – who live in Cienfuegos, Cuba.  The exhibition opens with a reception from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 19 at Bihl Haus Arts. The exhibition runs through July 2.

Through their work, the artists explore the human body, a frequent theme in Cuban art, from different perspectives and in different media, yet each is concerned with the act of being, of the future and the past, of the personal and the social. Their artistic concerns are formed from a rich panoramic of visions and endless dreams and challenges that revolve around the intersection of individual and the nation.

The evening includes live music by Cienfuegos of Austin (members are originally from Cienfuegos, Cuba), Cuban fare and libations. Three participants, artists Adrian Rumbaut and Elias Acosta and exhibition curator Liam Nodal, will visit from Cienfuegos.

Rumbaut, Villalvilla and Nodal will present a gallery talk at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, moderated by Dr. Andrea O'Reilly Herrera, associate professor of ethnic studies, University of Colorado and author of "Cuban Artists across the Diaspora" (UT Press, 2011). Additional gallery events include a reading by Cuban American poet Jo Reyes-Boitel at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, and a talk on Cuban/U.S. history by Dr. Catherine Komisaruk, associate professor of history at UTSA, at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24.
