Annie Labatt Lecture Series: Medieval Looking: Seeing Medieval Art

In the series Medieval Looking, Dr. Labatt focuses on the medieval collections of the McNay, objects which will have been recently reinstalled in the galleries. Drawing upon the holdings of the McNay, Labatt situates medieval works of art—paintings, stained glass, statuary—within a broader art-historical context, one which will consider the medieval world, American collecting practices, and more contemporary art. The series considers how medieval art was read, how it was created, how art mattered in the Middle Ages, and how the Middle Ages matter today.

Annie Montgomery Labatt is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She graduated with High Honors from Barnard College of Columbia University in 2002, and received her PhD from Yale University in 2011. While a graduate student she won a two-year Rome Prize at the American Academy of Rome, and was also a Fellow at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. She has worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on two major exhibitions, once as a research assistant and once as a Chester Dale Fellow. She has two books forthcoming: Art History 101…without the Exams, a collection of the twenty lectures she gave at the San Antonio Museum of Art, from Trinity University Press; and Laboratory of Images: Emerging Iconographies in 8th- and 9th- Century Rome, a study of the development of Christian imageries.
