Bria Woods is a photographer and artist based in San Antonio, Texas. She’s been behind the lens for the past 15 years, focusing on photojournalism, portraiture, and multimedia projects.

Humans and their unique stories are at the crux of her work. This passion gave birth to The Herstory Project, an ongoing multimedia series documenting women leaders. This project marries her love of portraiture radio and voice. Bria believes there is power in hearing someone use their voice to tell their own story.

Her photography has been exhibited throughout Texas and in Atlanta, Georgia. Bria’s work has been published on BBC.com, in the Washington Post, in the San Antonio Report, and Edible SA magazine.

Bria is a proud alumna of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Westminster in London, England. Born and raised in Washington, D.C. she now calls San Antonio her second home where she proudly supports the Spurs and hosts a weekly show on KRTU 91.7 FM called Women in Jazz.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

The Herstory Project is an ongoing multimedia storytelling series that creates a living record of the women leaders making meaningful change in the San Antonio community.

The project is presented in portraits, audio, and video recordings. Each group is called a chapter. Chapter One focused on Black women during Black History Month in 2021. In the audio recordings, I asked them to answer the question, “What brings you joy?” Chapter Two explores legacy. I asked the new group of women to answer two questions: If you could sit down with your great-grandmother what would you want her to know about your life compared to hers? And if you could sit down with your great-granddaughter what would you want her to say about you? Chapter three talks about rest. The women answered three questions: “How do you find rest? Are you getting the rest you need? How can we make rest more communal?”

The goal of The Herstory Project is to build a digital and physical textbook for children and adults to know the names, faces, and stories of the women shaping our community. As a black woman, I never had many women to look up to in various industries. I want to change that for children today. Women are doing tireless and often thankless work every single day to keep our communities afloat. We should know their stories just as well as we know those of the “founding fathers.” Women are taking back the pen of history to ensure their stories are remembered for generations to come.
