I’m walking down the path along the San Antonio Riverwalk South of Confluence Park with it’s
undulating concrete forms, excited by the prospect of experiencing a total annular eclipse for the
first time. I walk the path contemplating the “big” deal made of the day’s eclipse and the
upcoming total eclipse in April 2024. I consider how remarkable I happen to live on a spot on
the planet in the crosshairs of two total eclipses in succession.
As the eclipse nears its climax, I stop on a bridge overlooking the river to view the Eclipse with
my eclipse glasses. I am struck by the cosmic events’ symbolism and even more so the
symbolism of the setting I chose. The sun coming together with the moon over a river on a
bridge reverberated with the symbols & themes alive in my artistic expression from day one over three decades ago.
The circles, spirals, the interplay of opposites, the sun, the moon, stars, and the bridge recurrent
throughout my artistic life rhymed with the ring of fire in the sky above me. As I walk back, I
contemplate the profoundly personal experience of a cosmic event set in motion billions of years
ago and not at all concerned with me. I thought about April 2024’s upcoming Total Eclipse and
it’s coincidence with my show At Clamp Light opening a few days later.
On that walk back to Confluence Park I realized all the works I would create for the Show would
be bookended by the two total eclipses. The title and theme , “Between Eclipses” came to mind
then. I will Present Mixed Media Works inspired and produced in San Antonio Between
Eclipses.
