Texas based painter and San Antonio native, Andrea Willems, conveys her internal personal narrative through landscape with themes around loss, place, and memory. She’s a New York Studio Program alumni and received her BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. In 2023 she received the Dennis Diderot grant and has work in private collections in Australia, New York, France and California.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Andrea Willems’ work explores the mystery of the human experience. Her still life’s, landscapes, and abstract works take on an otherworldly qualities by contrasting thin veils of paint over matte black grounds, with colorful layers and loose brushwork. Her paintings mirror moments within an internal landscape. Forever in flux: highs and lows, peaks and valleys, urban and rural, whether developed or rebuilt, her work reminds us how closely our humanity is tied to our landscape.
