View moreWhen approaching any musical situation as an individual or as a collective, the goal is to always serve the song, which in turn, serves the audience/listener. The act of performing music will always be a team effort, because in order to achieve the intended goal, all parties must surrender their egos and do what is best for the particular moment. Dynamics, intensity, and groove are the determining factors for these thing to happen.
When asked about making the right decisions to achieve victory, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin said:
"If it's conducive to engineering victory -- that's our sole agenda. It's putting together a plan and highlighting the skills of players that produce victory... We're singularly focused on this weeks opportunity which is to win this game."
What I take from that philosophy is that maintaining focus on the goal and having gratitude for the opportunity to pursue it should be at the forefront. Once the focus is in line with the intention, a plan must be set in place to achieve your goal.
It is not lost on me that I have a special opportunity to create and perform music, and I want to put the same nurture and care into the art as it has done for me. Music has moved me and shaped the person I am today, and I hope to continue to spread the joy and power of music throughout my community and around the world.
