Billy Calzada is a veteran photojournalist who loves wielding the gentle power of the camera to tell the stories of our times and our lives. As a newspaper photographer, he honed his skills by making pictures in many fields of photography. He approaches all assignments with enthusiasm backed by experience. He is adept at sports, senior portraits, news, architecture, drone aerials, real estate, and virtually any area of photography. He is available to make images for you from his base in San Antonio, Texas, and beyond.

He has earned many awards for his photography, including the NPPA President’s Medal and the NPPA 1st Amendment Award, the Texas Veterans Commission Excellence in Media Award, numerous Texas Press Association awards, recognition from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Scripps-Howard newspapers, El Paso Press Club, many NPPA monthly clip contest awards, Tribune newspapers and Hearst newspapers. He has judged the worldwide United States Air Force photo contest, many National Press Photographers Association clip contests and the Pictures of the Year International.

Billy is originally from El Paso, Texas, and attended the University of Texas at El Paso. He has been a staff photographer at the San Antonio Express-News, Orlando Sentinel and the El Paso Herald-Post. He was selected to be a William Randolph Heart Visiting Fellow in Residence at the University of Texas in 1998.
