Carlos Ponce worked for 11 years for the Health Science Center at San Antonio as a social researcher. He became interested in the stories of people while conducting interviews for the UTHSC and he used several of these conversations as the base of his collection of short stories in Spanish: Platicas de Mi Barrio. He also has written more than 50 poems that have been published in English and Spanish publications, a novel: El Gringo Latino that was published in 2012 and two books for children.

Mr. Ponce, while working for the UTHSCSA, produced educational videos that dealt with health problems that affect Hispanics in the US. He has taught creative writing to elders at community centers and to adolescents in middle and high schools and several courses about writing at Gemini Ink. He teaches how to stimulate people with dementia to family and loved ones of individuals suffering this condition.

As an addition, to communicate the stories that reflect human drama, Mr. Ponce began to incorporate paintings that reflect our doubts, conflicts and hope.

Mr. Ponce holds a master’s degree in sociology from the National University of Mexico (UNAM), and a Master’s in public Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
