Charlie Morris

My name is Charlie Morris.

I am a working artist and educator living in San Antonio for the past 20 years.

I have a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin

and a MFA from The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana

I consider myself a mixed media artist, with a focus on 2-D mixed media, print production, bookmaking, and lens based projects.

San Antonio has remained my home, though I often travel outside the country to attend international art residencies, produce exhibitions, and give talks to the public.

I have taught College level fine arts courses here in San Antonio since 2002 to the present.

In 2022 I established Shadowbag Press LLC, where I create limited edition photographic books and prints.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Currently, my work is focused the photographic documentation of urban and natural environments.

Working in a documentary manner, my goal is to reveal that everyday situations we all find ourselves in can be rich in intellectual depth and aesthetic depth. I look for contrasts.

I am less interested in artistically embellishing, or overtly creating a synthesis of that which is not readily accessible to the public. The works also exhibit an absence of the maker, with more focus on the solitary in situ moments that seem to carry on without our attentiveness.

Along side my more minimal, encountered objects from the street walks I make as a part of my process, I have always had a strong drive to document our San Antonio local music club scene. I have a vast photographic archive of images from this time based on the local music scene from 2002 to the present day.

Documenting the local music scene became even more pressing for me, due to the fact that here in San Antonio, we are slowly losing our local live music scene through unchecked gentrification, reckless ill conceived construction projects, covid funding disparities, and general economic hardship on our communities over past several years.
