Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

salto mortale.  Best describes my life, artistic style, approach and philosophy. My photography reflects a thirty-five year trek from when I was tasked with my first assignment by my own grandmother. I was to capture an image of Saint Pope John Paul II as he came to San Antonio Texas to bless the Alamo in 1986. Among thousands,  I was there on the Alamo Cenotaph with a second hand film camera bought from a pawn shop in Denver Colorado. Earlier that day I had loaded the camera and made my way downtown to the Alamo. I hardly knew anything about photography the camera, the lens or even composition. I set aside all my worries and I was able to capture a few images slightly out of focus but good enough to allow my grandmother to smile and shed a tear when I presented her an eight by ten of Saint John Paul II and Bishop Flores in the infamous "Popemobile" several weeks later. Fast forward 37 years  and a heafty several million images taken with influences by Helmut Newton to Weegee to Heri Cartier-Bresson.
My philosophy was simple, "get in there, get the shot, and get out." but it changed when I delved more into film making. I took the same approach "salto mortale" as a filmmaker. Filmed short films "Hunting Diabla(2015)" in the famous Texas Theater Basement in Oakcliff, Dallas "favorite hideout of Lee Harvey Oswald" and "LOSS(2017)" in the last famous "Negros Only Motel"  Green Acres Motel at 1711 McCoy St. Dallas Texas before it was demolished to set way for gentrification. Give me a moment of your time, I will tell you a story...some joyous some tragic...you decide.
