Currently based in the rural outskirts of San Antonio, Crysta (aka Maypearl Crystal)  is a dancer, choreographer, painter, graphic designer, and digital film-maker.  With BS (Texas State University) and MFA (Texas Woman’s University) degrees in dance, she may seem Texas bound, but she has performed and taught dance in Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada, California, and New Zealand.  Crysta is passionate about collaboration and seeks art projects that help to deeply engage both makers and witnesses with the work.  She also loves building diverse communities through the arts, and works with all ages: from toddlers to adults.  Crysta has collaborated with dance artists across the US such as Mark Dendy, Toni Bravo, Jordan Fuchs, Sarah Gamblin, Rebecca Bryant, Tanesha Payne, Violeta De Leon Davila, Jane Hawley and currently Co-Directs Big Rig Dance Collective with three amazing dance artists: Whitney Geldon, Amanda Jackson, and Lily Sloan.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Dance happens everywhere, all the time; it’s up to artists to frame it.

I want to guide the witness as a partner; take them on a journey through a vision, give them room to explore, and search for ways to help them become a part of the work.

The process is essential, and I aim to reveal it within the performance.
