I am a San Antonio based photographer and I have always enjoyed capturing moments on camera. I grew up taking pictures of things or settings that I felt best reflected a memory in my life. I am interested in the unknown and I choose to relay this ideology in my current portfolio titled “Decadent World.” The lack of straightforward storytelling is something that I willingly choose to follow because it leaves room for multiple perspectives. I have always been fascinated by the mystery of abandoned architecture. I constantly find myself thinking of the many narratives that led to the vacancy of these buildings, as well as the stories that are hidden within them. I have found myself exploring these places, discovering and documenting the decrepit nature of humanity.

My work primarily consists of digital images, often times manipulated or altered in an effort to highlight the bleak relationship between reality and disillusionment. My work focuses heavily on the urban sprawl of the world and the dystopian dilemma of human carelessness. My creative process stems from my experiences of admiring abandoned architecture and analyzing the reasoning behind the barren landscapes that these buildings share. My work is strongly influenced by photographer Todd Hido’s Houses at Night portfolio This process of thematic exploration has implored me to document these areas and shape them into a world that is completely alien to ours, allowing for viewers to separate themselves from reality. The liminal nature of my photos portrays a transitionary stage that lurks between a period of uncertainty and that of a place that echoes familiarity. A documentation of a place that was once thriving with life is now in a period of conscious isolation. My work is a visual representation of the lack of conscious awareness of our fleeting existence, similar to these places of decay, which have undergone a pathway of darkness and death, we follow similar fates. Through my process of creating art that is both lamenting and elegiac, my work strives to create a sculpting of questioning of our own reality, a forced separation of our understanding of the world. I find a personal connection to these locations because of my own childhood explorations of decrepit buildings, I see my current project as a mature exploration of these themes of isolation. I hope that my portfolio can create a conversation about the uneasiness of spaces that most people choose to ignore, conveying an aesthetic that is devoid of any real identity but of one that the viewer can create themselves.
