Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

I am Dezarre Boone. I am Latina Artist Educator who is recognizes that celebrating your body is not a walk in the park. Everyone has trouble embracing their whole self. Once you get in front of a mirror, it is easy to criticize and pick out features you do not like about yourself. I know this feeling first hand and have struggled with self-image throughout my life. In fact, it is through my experiences in dealing with self-image that I was inspired to make these works.
Therefore, through my artwork, I encourage everyone to appreciate and accept the body they have. My work is also driven by my experiences as an art educator and an advocate and a body positive warrior journey. I work with a variety of mediums such as printmaking, watercolor, acrylic paintings and sculpture. Through my pieces, I visualize not only the moments of acceptance of the body but also the inner demons that people face on a daily basis. My art style shatters the ideal image constructed by Western Beauty Standards and captures raw beauty.
Within my pieces, I tackle the subjects taboo topics of beauty of stretch marks, weight, freckles, and even hair positivity. I incorporate symbolism in my work to provide a clear image of what I am attempting to portray. Overall, my work challenges ideas that are influenced through social media, mass media, and idealized beauty standards. My ultimate wish is for someone to view my artwork and walk away with the motivation and inspiration to embrace their whole self.
