Elizabeth is a self taught paper mache artist. She is a self employed registered interior designer but creating in paper mache form is her passion. Utilizing simple materials to create 3D works of art is satisfying and enjoyable. She has participated in numerous craft markets throughout her 14 years of making paper mache art, notably the Esperanza Peace Market (pre-Covid), the King William Fair for the past 12 years and The Renegade Fair in Austin. She participated in the Say Si Small Scale Auction Fundraiser last year.
Artist Style: Visual Art: Decorative/Ornamental, Sacred/Liturgical Art; Folk art
Artist Medium: Acrylic; Paper Mache
Elizabeth celebrates her Mexican American heritage and culture by creating works of art that represent a love for vibrant colors and vintage Mexican graphic patterns. Utilizing iconic imagery such as La Virgen de Guadalupe in her work, celebrates motherhood and faith. Being self taught she calls herself a folk artist, because there is a very handmade sensibility to her work. The paper mache process utilizes readily available and very inexpensive material, it is reused cardboard for the templates and newspaper for the building of the forms and the paper mache layering process. From these simple materials she creates 3D works of art that most think are carvings of wood. There is no greater satisfaction then creating something with your hands and from such simple materials.
