Elsa Champion (La Chispa) was born into a family of Flamenco artist, Teresa Champion and El Curro, San Antonio Founders of Flamenco who pass on the art of Flamenco and Folklorico to Elsa at an early age. She recieved her stage name La Chispa by Antonio Montoya El Farruco Flamenco Master from Spain, because she was small and had quick footwork.  Antonio Said she was a spark of  talent “Un Chispa ” Elsa continued to develope her dance style under Masters from Spain, Cristobal  Reyes , Jose Greco, and Nana Lorca. She began teaching at the Teresa Champion Dance Academy and later She has open her own Dance Studio. She continues to pass on her knowledge of Flamenco and Folklorico in city programs and studios, working with Children, young adults, and Seniors. She has toured performing nationally with Los Flamencos de San Antonio and La Chispa Dance Company.  Currently she is Dance Director for Wellmeds of San Antonio. La Chispa directs Las Abuelitas Senior group and La Chispa Dance Company.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

I am Elsa Champion La Chispa am a dance performer, director and teacher of  Flamenco and Folklorico Arts. I use traditional costuming and dance style in my presentations to not only entertain, but to also bring cultural awareness of my art form, and at the same time educational value to the audience and students I teach.  I strongly feel that I need to continue developing and keeping my art forms of Flamenco and Folklorico alive and in its pure form and keep it going for generations to come. I am always working to collaborate with other artist to bring new works to live on stage and the dance classrooms.         dance performer, director and teacher
