I am a San Antonio native. As such, I studied art (and graduated) from both SAC and UTSA. I have had a few careers here, including a five-year-stint as the Black-and-White department at River City Silver, and most recently I am retired from 20 years as a special education middle school science teacher at SAISD. I began showing photos at Centro Cultural Aztlan (back in the day, thanks to Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez). I am currently a member of the Blue Star Arts Collective and have displayed photographic work there for the last three years. I have had two feature-artist shows, including several black-and-white photographs for the Fotoseptiembre ’23 show entitled ” Conversations from the Graveyard”. On display currently (Dec. ’23), I have an installation in the alcove at the Upstairs Studios at Blue Star alcove entitled “Night in the Bamboo Forest”, consisting of nine painted rice paper panels hung from the ceiling, lit by colored floor lights and projected stars/moons/galaxies, as well as nine photographic prints depicting the Moon in various ways, a water and flute soundtrack (courtesy Gus Wanner), and some floor fish to nibble on your toes as you immerse yourself in the bamboo forest environment. I love art, music, travel, animals, nature and astronomy, and I love to cook, garden, listen to live music, play guitar and sing, read, eat, work, and be with my friends and family.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

My photography has been very documentary. I like to record where I've been. I like to record nature - to record moments in time as illuminated by a setting sun or a full moon. I drew and painted as a younger person and lately I have begun to do so again, because it fits the way I want to express myself - not just recording. Photography allows me to shoot a scene and then find the details - but painting allows me to take my time with it and put the elements of the environment in as I see fit. I can reproduce a scene in the colors I want to experience, or with the mood I want to invoke. I want to create environments which evoke those times and places we've loved in the past and wish to return to - or wish to show others.
