My visual artworks are aerosol masterpieces on giant walls, located across SA, the US, and Mexico. The core spray painting practice centers on the name- TRIZ, and writing-stylizing it in fresh, distinctive letter styles, color patterning, and fluid shaping. My works draw on my role as a Geography teacher, creating within the letters cultural landscapes, and using original cultural references (e.g. drips, blends, crowns). These walls and my Style express puro love and light, with vibrant, unexpected color combinations, and sacred geometric flows of Hip Hop movimiento letreado. My works of art, from larger scale Wildstyles on walls to smaller canvas and blackbook works, elicit powerful reactions of ánimo from viewers of all ages and backgrounds.
Those who do this artform call it "Writing" or "Style Writing". Ours is a place-making practice that uplifts ourselves together with our communities. Each version of the self-selected, culturally-derived name, captures the essential self and spirit of the Writer. Our visual slanguaging of writing names on walls, codifies and transforms language and culture, in a fresh masterpiece every time.
As a creative social scientist I have harnessed my aerosol practice to inform my classroom craft as a pedagogue and my rigorous research as a scholar. From my combination of wall-painting, teaching practice, and research, I explain how Hip Hop cultural practice shapes human literacies, language, and learning.
