FLAMENCO DANCER & DANCE MAKER
Genevieve grew up in San Antonio, TX where she began dancing flamenco and folklorico during childhood with the San Antonio Department of Parks & Recreation, creating many fond memories and relationships with her instructors and peers. Over the course of her young adulthood, she continued to pursue her dual goals of dancing and completing her academic studies.
She has performed with dance companies across the country and world. Some of the highlights of her performance career include roles as a member and soloist with the Maru Montero Dance Company, Austin Flamenco Dance Company, and Arte y Pasión. These opportunities challenged her to improve and fueled her independent studies. Genevieve has intensely pursued self-improvement. She has traveled to Sevilla and Madrid for advanced flamenco training at Amor de Dios and FlamencoDanza, respectively. She regularly visits the University of New Mexico to attend Flamenco Festival Internacional to take workshops with the world’s most esteemed flamenco maestros and bring back the imparted wisdom to her hometown.
Genevieve has competed in the Flamenco Vivo Certamen (Tablao Division) in New York City. As part of this opportunity, she won honorable mention and completed residencies in New York City as well as at the Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Upstate NY under the mentorship of acclaimed flamenco artists Isaac Tovar and Florencia Oz. This opportunity allowed her to take her performance quality to the next level and network with other burgeoning talents around the States.
Genevieve currently teaches young people and adults at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and the Armed Services Arts Partnership in San Antonio, TX. Teaching is one of her most cherished callings and she loves passing this art form down from one generation to the next. She is pleased to teach the lessons of dedication and teamwork through the medium of dance, and she absolutely loves watching the progression of her students as they begin to embark on their own journeys.
Genevieve considers it part of her mission to not just evolve as an individual artist, but to share with, inspire, and create opportunities for the next generation of flamenco artists in this city. She has spent her more recent years striving to grow and unite the flamenco community in San Antonio through her independent, grassroots productions of shows and workshops featuring national and international talents. She has single-handedly organized local tours for world renowned artists such as Irene Lozano, Illeana Gomez, Jose Manuel Heredia, Isaac Tovar, and Fanny Ara. Each tour has impacted and inspired 50-150 Texas flamenco aficionados and students and has served as a catalyst for a true sense of community and artistic inspiration.
Genevieve considers herself a lifelong learner and lover of dance. Dance has allowed her a meditative space to unleash her imagination, dance provides her a medium to transmit her truth through movement, and has also served as a platform to positively impact her students and community at large.
