Giomara Bazaldua

Giomara Bazaldua is a San Antonio-born and raised dancer, producer, and choreographer whose work blends culture, activism, and movement in groundbreaking ways. Growing up surrounded by the rich traditions of dance, theater, and charrería, Gio was introduced to performance art at a young age. Their journey into dance began with the Guadalupe Dance Company, a culturally rich institution where they were exposed to multiple genres that celebrate and elevate Latinx heritage. This early foundation not only shaped their artistic identity but also provided a deep connection to the roots of traditional performance art.

As a multi-faceted artist, Gio’s work spans a diverse range of styles, from Ballet Folklórico to Modern Dance, Salsa, Bachata, and even Fire Dance. However, they are perhaps most well-known as the creator of Panza Fusion, a cutting-edge dance style that marries the graceful movements of tribal belly dance with the rhythms and flair of Latin dance forms. This dynamic fusion creates a visceral, powerful expression that speaks to their roots while pushing the boundaries of traditional performance.

In addition to their technical skill, Gio’s choreography reflects her deep commitment to social justice and community engagement. Through Zombie Bazaar Panza Fusion, a queer-based performance collective they founded, Gio uses dance as a tool for activism, addressing issues such as LGBTQIA+ rights, immigrant justice, body autonomy, and more.
