Joseph Martinez
My name is Joseph Asher Martinez, I grew up in Tennessee raised around art and media because my father was a musician as-well. He encouraged me early on to pursue the expression of self and taught me to love art unconditionally(my older brother was also a musician). Eventually after the recession of 2008 we were forced to move to San Antonio where I went to school and continued living. But throughout my entire life I had a yearning, one to create music and art in my own way, I had always written songs and sung growing up but I felt that I hadn’t found a medium that allowed myself to explore. Years later I fell in love with soul music, R&B and funk before finding my place in jazz, which pushes for complete expression of self. This unlocked something in me and I started to study and teach myself keyboard/trumpet so that I could finally be free. Right now I’m very young and still have time to continue my growth, I’ve written over 50 originals and have worked on numerous jazz projects and ambient works, while also doing photography occasionally. I’m in school currently to become a counselor and if all goes well in some odd years I’ll be able to help others on their own personal movements.

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):
Art is my life, because it gives me a voice in a world of ego centric value, a world where competition and anger thrive above the values of community and togetherness. Even as a child I understood that moving down a path where I strive to create my entire life would make it hard for me, and the same goes for others who are sensitive and need some form of outlet. I live for art because without it my voice is disregarded, the pursuit of complete expression or musical purity is my goal. One that you can never achieve, my art will change as I change with imperfections and all. I will create art my entire life because it's all I know, and a part of me wants to share the joy I feel in creation with others. My music is a complete reflection of me, and in that regard I have already achieved everything I could ever want in the realm of art.
