My name is Joseph Martinez and I’ve spent all my life creating music and being surrounded by art, but it wasn’t until the last 5 years that I moved towards complete expression and developing my own individual sound through self-absolution and technical ability.

The project I’m working on right now is a free jazz group titled “space solstice” which performs mainly originals and I take inspiration from various artists such as John Coltrane, Ahmad Jamal, Larry Young, Vince Guaraldi/Bola Sete, and Chet Baker. I hope to continue to take photographs, and create music while enjoying art as I get older, and hopefully move into teaching music once my methods are cemented.

Besides art, I am currently in school for psychology and plan to move towards counseling and therapy work. I want to expand my mind and try to learn as much as I can while I’m young.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

The current project is all about self-expression in its purest form, John Coltrane believed that an artist should lay out their entire being into their music, and for me, the best way to do that is through improvisation, I feel that imperfection and live music allows a more free connection to the world around you, especially if you're trying to create art with the intention of purity.

For me, music is a lifelong journey in which I will always be a student of art and music, and "space solstice" is just the beginning of a long string of projects in search of complete freedom of expression. To play music entirely from your soul or self you need to be in touch with the hiccups and human errors of music and allow yourself to view art as collaborative rather than competitive.
