Juan Zavala Castro is a multidisciplinary artist working in San Antonio, Texas. Being born and raised in Coahuila, Mexico until the age of 12, he is influenced by Mexican aesthetics and symbolism. His predominantly monochromatic work is reflective of his past and it observes a now distant cultural connection. Juan has worked in non-profit arts organizations for 10 years and is an advocate for arts education, wide public access to museums, and service-based learning.

Drawing from art history, craft traditions, narrative art and tableaus, my work is predominantly focused on storytelling. I am interested in exploring my own identity, through images, symbols, text and their relationships to each other within my work to give visual form to their meaning. Rooted in an initial overarching concept and intuitive compositional decisions following, my work is a funnel for disparate ideas and questions of being a Mexican man, conscious of the distance to an ever-evolving Mexican culture. My work is a multidimensional expression of my interest, and myself.
