Kai Aguirre is a surrealist artist living in San Antonio, TX. after graduating from Savannah College of Arts and Design in 2023 with experience in sequential arts, painting, and storyboarding, they work on zines, stickers, amateur animations, and more! Kai enjoys using Peppa, their Dog, as a muse and other animals that have impacted their life. While struggling with mental health and identity, they use a more twisted subject matter to understand themselves and to connect into a fictional surreal reality as represented in their work. Their paintings force out internal turmoil with the twisted comfort of cute animals. With this series, Kai chooses to be confined into the unusual to find shelter from the real world.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

I find a lot of discomfort in life and the way I can comfort that piece of me is to create a world to make people understand me and others who seek comfort in darkness. This is through typical creatures of comfort such as pets, flowers, and candles, while adding this element of discomfort to juxtapose.  I struggle with anxiety and depression and I believe that liminal spaces create this reality of comfort by having me revisit familiar yet new environments. What I find in my community, we want to relive moments of nostalgia and live in easier moments of our lives. I hope through these paintings, I can insert elements of animals and even myself into these liminal environments to provide this feeling.
