I wasn’t born in San Antonio; I was born in Corpus Christi and lived there until I was 13. My mother, however, loved San Antonio’s city and culture. While we lived there, she taught me to walk the streets, listen to the sounds, and observe people’s movements—always reminding me to be cautious. When I turned 13, she allowed me to explore on my own. During this period of discovery, I uncovered the secret world of the art community, even at such a young age. My mother believed in my art and found ways to keep it alive, even if she didn’t always show it openly. She had faith in my ability to draw and create something beautiful.
