Hi there! My name is Lovelle Marquez. I am a neuroscience major at the University of Texas at San Antonio. For as long as I can remember, I have always been artistically inclined. Ever since the day I could hold a paint brush, I have been creating pieces of art. As I’ve grown to hone my abilities, I started to tell stories within my work. My medium of art mostly consists of acrylic based paintings with a bit of colored pencils. When I create my work, I intend for it to have a deeper meaning that what you first see on the canvas. Each stroke tells a story that blends together to create a complex narrative. I intend for my work to inspire other young artists to always keep pursing what allows them to be creative and what makes them happy.

When creating this piece, I wanted to have the theme surround the idea that as girls grow up and experience puberty, they are treated as if they are older than they actually are. The concept of having a “period” is one that is still taboo in this day and age. While it may be a right of passage, when a girl gets her period, often times our childhood and “innocence” is stripped from her. I embedded a lot a symbolism within this peace such as the double braids, insinuating that the girl in the painting is young. In a way, she is forced to grow up, and that is symbolized by her “smoking” the tampon like a cigarette. Her mellow expression showcases how dull and lifeless she feels because of the changes occurring within her. I created this piece by sketching a rough outline of the girl, then I did an underpainting and slowly built up my colors from there. At the end, I painted a glaze over it in order to give it a shiny and more refined look.
