Matthew Pineda

Headshot by Samuel Gomez

My name is Matthew Pineda. I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and pursued college shortly after graduating high school in 2015. I first attended the University of Houston-Victoria and majored in creative writing where I focused on short fiction and screenwriting. After Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, I transferred to the University of North Texas where my major transitioned to English with a concentration in creative writing and claimed a second major in media arts. I continued my focus on short fiction and screenwriting, but also expanded my focus in poetry, production, and film theory.

From early childhood memories of playing movies on my family’s VCR, I’ve found myself fond of the fuzzy warmth and imperfections you get from watching a film on VHS. Even when you hear the crackle and pops from a used vinyl record, older pieces of physical media provide a unique quality to the way you experience that project. Whether it’s a film or album, they’re warm, living pieces of media that I believe enhance your life to be a cinematic experience. I explore this concept of imperfections not just through a visual medium, but also through my music and writing. I like to describe my art as part of a large Texas speculative fiction rooted in reality with surrealistic elements.
