Maureen ‘Moe’ Doebbler has been an art educator, advocate and artist for 30+ years. Although recently retired, her focus is to continually advocate for fine arts in Texas; within the Texas school system, community centers, museums and non profit organizations. “I believe an arts education is quintessential to a child’s learning, growth and development.”

She moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1996, holds a Bachelors in Fine Arts and Art Education from the State University of New York Education and a Masters in Art Education from Texas Tech University. After moving to Texas she began teaching art, first for the city of SA Visiting Artist Program, then in the public schools at both the middle school and high school level. During her tenure she’s helped write visual arts curriculum for several districts, along with creating an adaptive art class program. She currently serves as the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA), Vice President-Elect for Membership and is a TAEA Fellow.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

In my artwork, I seek to uncover and reflect upon personal experiences and life events, using a range of media to explore the emotional resonance of each. From mixed media paintings and metal sculptures to more intimate forms of expression, I draw upon the inherent qualities of materials to evoke specific feelings and responses. My work examines the intersection of the mundane and the profound, particularly in how textures and diverse media can merge to create a dynamic visual experience.

In my two-dimensional pieces, I often work with organic materials such as wood, stones, rocks, sand, twigs, seeds, and bones. These natural elements form the foundation of my compositions, which I then juxtapose with industrial materials like plaster, paint, and stains. This combination blurs the boundaries between the natural world and human-made environments, while retaining a sense of familiarity and intimacy.

For my three-dimensional works, I rely on materials such as clay, wood, paper mache, metal, and patina. These materials are carefully chosen to emphasize both the comforting familiarity of form and the deeper emotional narratives embedded in the work.

The process of exploring and experimenting with diverse media is at the heart of my practice. It is the materials themselves that inspire and guide my designs, whether I am creating a bold acrylic painting or constructing a welded sculpture. Each medium plays a vital role in shaping both my intention and my artistic process.
