My name, as a child, was Roberto Dorantes Alonso. At age 11 my mother remarried and I was adopted, becoming Robert James Wilkens. As an Hispanic with an Anglo last name I refer to myself as a purgatory artist, I see two sides but am fully accepted by neither. I label my work expansionism as it broadens viewpoints and expands perceptions. Using oil, on primed canvas, I apply and break traditional rules of composition, balance, and color theory. I build layers using scumble, drizzle and glaze. Using hyper-realism, surrealism, abstraction, light and dark, I create worlds that allow viewers to expand their beliefs and vision of reality.
