Rudi Harst has enjoyed making people feel good with his words and music since childhood. His inclusive, affirming artistic work reflects his multi-cultural background: conceived in Borneo and born in the Netherlands, he immigrated to South Texas with his Indonesian-Dutch parents at age five and became a naturalized American citizen at thirteen. Rudi is a writer, musician, performance artist and inspirational speaker who has shared his work in countless concerts, churches, corporations and cultural events throughout the country. He attended Trinity University (San Antonio) on a full academic scholarship and after graduating with a BA in psychology, he chose to pursue his academic interests through independent study while supporting himself singing folk/rock songs in coffeehouses, cafes, churches, and bars throughout the US and Europe. As he traveled, Rudi learned from a variety of teachers in psychology, spirituality, movement, meditation, and performance art. He also cultivated his trademark folksy style of presentation, blending clever, carefully crafted lyrics and catchy melodies, delivered with spontaneity, theatrical intensity, and humor. For 27 years he served as Spiritual Director of the Celebration Circle of San Antonio, an interfaith spiritual community he co-founded in 1993. He’s written and published nine albums of original music, and is the author of Hurry Slowly: Living from the Inside Out, a book of creative non-fiction which was adapted into a successful musical ... view more »

MORE ABOUT THIS ARTIST

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

I have been a full time professional singer/songwriter, performance artist, and inspirational speaker since 1986, deriving 100%  of my income from sharing my words and music. I sing, play and speak for a wide variety of venues and audiences, but my work is always focused on engaging and entertaining others while fostering consciousness, inclusiveness and creativity. In addition to appearing in concert and theatrical adaptations of my songs, I sing at numerous public and private events, perform weddings and funerals, lead retreats, and teach creative expression.

All of this performative work is anchored in 40+ years of sustained daily writing practice, resulting in thousands of songs as well as hundreds of essays, poems, reflections and stories. This intensely personal and solitary practice serves to form and inform my public performances, which look and sound spontaneous, but are actually grounded in carefully crafted word-smithing.
