Stephen Longoria is a Hispanic artist from the Rio Grande Valley with a background in fabrication and installation work. He has a strong foundation in the technical skills and experience necessary to create. His work has included large scale murals and Burning Man Projects. In addition to his technical skills, he is deeply committed to engaging with and involving local communities in the creation of public art. Believing that public art should be meaningful and relevant to the community, actively seeking out opportunities to be involved in local communities in his work. This has included participation in events such as the Day of the Dead Altar at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and the Mission Cultural Center of San Francisco. The experience of creating public art and engaging with the community has allowed him to develop a strong foundation in the skills and techniques necessary to create work that is both technically proficient and emotionally resonant. Working with the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin and BLK WHT & GRY Gallery have also kept his work hyperlocal to the Central Texas Region.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

My style is heavy with iconography black and white shapes keeping everything remotely simple but also always catching the viewers attention with symbolism! My approach to art is designing and making things my younger self would enjoy. I heavy a heavy design influence in my craft and that helps with overall concept and finalizing my work. The philosophy I have is very different compared to most artist I give a lot of the work I make away for free. I don't really enjoy owning any of my work. I would much rather just keep constantly creating and if someone wants my work they are more than welcome to it. My subject matter is always what I am dealing with and or where I am. I constantly draw upon what I know and the people I surround myself with. I love to create what I see and I love visiting cities when I travel and getting a vibe of what the culture and who the people are. This is extremely important for my story and what I care about.
