Sylvia Mizielinska, or Sylvia Mizi, is a Polish photographer who made San Antonio her chosen home. Her signature style revolves around centering images on a single element and strong focus on color. Though she was known to enjoy photography since she was a teenager, settling in the colorful and culturally rich Alamo City inspired her to fully immerse herself in the art form. Since becoming a professional photographer in 2019, Sylvia has focused on capturing artistic portraits of both people and animals. Capturing the beauty of nature also has a special place in her heart. Her signature photography style speaks through the focus on color and unique details that escape the ordinary eye, which she brings out through the use of a wide aperture lens.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Where everyone might be taking pictures of an expansive vista, she will kneel down to photograph a unique flower and immortalize it before it gets trampled by the oblivious crowd. Where everyone will try to capture an entire scene with all of its components, she will notice how one element interacts uniquely with its surroundings or the light and compose the picture around it. The same tendency shows up in her street and behind-the-scenes event photography: the subject is brought out from their surroundings and for just one second, they have the frame all to themselves; they may feel just a cog in a machine, but in that instance they are seen for what makes them special. Though Sylvia Mizi is no stranger to black and white photography, you can usually recognize her unique style by the strong focus on colors. Even in a mundane scene, she finds a way to bring out the pop of color that has always been there but which a bystander may not otherwise pay attention to. Dogs have a special place in Sylvia's heart. In addition to creative studio pet portraits, she has made it her mission to make a difference in the lives of the unloved dogs of San Antonio. In 2021, she collaborated with Animal Control Services to showcase some of the at-risk dogs in need of loving homes. By dressing them up in cute costumes and patiently gaining their trust, she was able to create images that displayed their personalities and changed the public's perception of these unwanted canines, many of which belong to stigmatized breeds. Her goal is to decrease the shelter dog crisis in San Antonio by addressing the issues at their root: educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pet to prevent the number of unwanted dogs, and the risks that come with supporting abusive backyard breeders. There are significant knowledge gaps in responsible dog ownership in many parts of San Antonio. Sylvia knows that one image can speak a thousand words and wants her work to contribute to a wider public awareness campaign.
