Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

I do not remember not drawing.  I grew up, like many children I suppose, copying images from comic books, cartoons, and book illustrations.  I remember we had books with the older illustrations, which, looking back on it, were somewhat creepy.  Like those from "Alice in Wonderland" , "The Wizard of Oz", and there was a fantastic pop up book my father had as a child, colled " Tony Sarg's Treasure Book".  All oddly enticing and nightmare inducing.

In high school, art classes were the only subject I excelled in.  But my art teacher did little to dissuade me from my habit of plagiarism..

I entered college knowing I wanted to study art, but with little idea what that meant, nor any direction towards making original artwork, instead of just copying.  That is until I discovered Dadaism.  And some later, similar philosophies in art, like Art Povera, and the Fluxus movement.  Here is where I discovered the connection between art and ideas.  I saw directly the connection of art as symbol reflecting meaning.

From here, I began to see a connection between the symbolic effect of found objects, created images, (drawn, painted, etc.)  and written and printed language.
