Yasmar Villegas Acevedo—artistically known as Yas—is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Puerto Rico, whose work stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. After years dedicated to professional careers in nursing and hairstyling, Yas returned to her true passion: art, dance, and theater—disciplines that had been put on hold during her youth.

Her artistic awakening emerged from a moment of profound personal breakdown. Amidst a battle with depression, she picked up a torn canvas and some paintbrushes to translate her pain into images. That act of rebellion against suffering became her primary language. Inspired by figures such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, her work explores human vulnerability and the beauty that emerges from what is fractured.

Currently based in San Antonio, Texas, she is the creator of the brand Mythos Chupacabra. The name pays homage to her Puerto Rican roots and the legends of her childhood, yet with a psychological twist: for Yas, the “Chupacabra” represents our own inner demons and the challenges of mental health. Her art serves as an invitation to coexist with those shadows, finding the necessary balance to transform chaos into peace.

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Hola mis curiosos., My name is Yasmar Villegas-Acevedo, and my work explores the intersection between pain and beauty through mixed media. Drawing upon the concept of Kintsugi, I seek to transform the emotional scars of depression and loss into threads of gold and light. Each piece represents a step on my journey of resilience, symbolizing the reconnection with my inner child and the strength that emerges from embracing our fractures. Through my brand, Mythos Chupacabra, I present pieces featuring deep textures, gemstones, and reliefs that invite introspection regarding mental health and hope. Gracias por leer me. YasVA xo
