African Americans are underrepresented in our society. We are unappreciated. We are beautiful. My goal is to share the beauty of my people.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Through my 3 years of photography, the driving force behind my portraits is my relentless love for my people and my culture. While my experience as an African-American woman in the United States has been one of struggle, resilience, and hardship, it has simultaneously allowed me to experience love, softness, and to find pride in my culture. Society has taught us to view black people through a very strict lens. We view blackness as rough and rigorous, most of us fighting to prove our worth. We are also taught that photography is meant to capture moments. Picking up my camera, allowed me not to capture, but to free myself and others from these stagnant views.  It allowed me to validate my people’s existence, our softness, and our beauty.
