Ancient Narratives: Present Time Life and Death Experiences

INFAMOUS ARTIVIST (artist + activist) David Zamora Casas has been creating Día de Muertos altares in the public forum for the past 32 years. These altars are constructed in public and academic settings. From 2006 – 2016 his politically charged installations could be seen on exhibit in the “Heart of the City,” Main Plaza. 

Currently Zamora Casas’s “Altar para el Espíritu de Rasquachismo” is on exhibit as part of  “XICANX: Dreamers and Change Makers / Soñadores y Agentes de Cambio,” on view until January 1, 2023 at the Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Also this year, Zamora Casas was featured in the book Day of the Dead in the USA: The Migration and Transformation of a Cultural Phenomenon written by Regina M. Marchi. The intention to politicize this sacred day as a tool for solidarity was born. 

Co-curator xela zero and DZC promise to transform the Oxenfree Collective gallery into a celebration — a fusion of experience-based reality and cathartic purge with amor, grief, and centuries-old magic, reflecting on the diversity of redemption and time shared lost.

This experience will showcase a genderfluid loving COMMUNITY of local artists and activists with works that reflect diversity and have a common goal of respect, happiness, prosperity and justice.

WORK includes

paintings, altars (ofrendas), photography, hand-crafted merchandise, poetry and performances.

Love, Solidarity, Houselessness, Pandemia, Domestic Violence, Gender Expression and Climate Chaos are offered for contemplation at this exhibit. 

Renowned photographer, Anthony Garica will be on-site documenting the event and the attendees, so dressing for Día de Muertos is encouraged!
