“What does ancient art tell us about the people?”

Harry J. Shafer, PhD\’s talk asks three leading questions: Who were the artists, what did they believe, and does their art tell us? They were the people who painted the Pecos River Style pictographic murals ca. 4,000-3,200 years ago, and the Classic Mimbres potters who painted the iconic patterns and murals on their pots ca. 970-890 years ago. What both groups believed was tailored by their specific ways of life, environment, origin, life and death, and cosmology. The two cultures were thousands of years apart in time, but ultimately connected in their underpinning history. They shared a view of the world, but one emphasizing ancestors and origin, and the other living with the ancestors who brought the rain.
