Black History Walking Tour

Join us at 10am for a Walking Black History Tour highlighting some of San Antonio’s most historic African-American landmarks and locations.
More than ever it is important that we understand the people and places that have helped to shape the identity of the Black Community, here in our city. If all politics are local then we declare the same in regards to history. There are monuments that we walk or drive past everyday not realizing that these places are a physical representation of our struggle for equality and independence.

THE TOUR
In this Walking Tour we will focus on some of the historic buildings and institutions that are located near Hackberry and Center Street; the heart of the Eastside of SATX.
We will visit staples in the SA Black Community including:

• Carver Cultural Community Center – erected in the early 1900’s the Carver has served as the San Antonio Eastside’s foremost gathering place of cultural exchange and performance arts.
• St. Paul United Methodist Church – established in 1866. It was the first African Americans church in San Antonio
• Carter Taylor Mortuary – the oldest Black mortuary in San Antonio, TX
• Myra Davis Hemmings Resource Center – named in honor of Mrs. Myra Davis Hemmings, a founding member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 1913… and more
