"A German Requiem," also termed "Human Requiem" by Brahms, was written following the death of his mother. In place of customary liturgical requiem texts, with their pleas of sparing the deceased from judgment, Brahms warmly sets Luther's German translation of the Bible in heartfelt compassion toward those left behind.
