Dock Space Gallery Presents : Paintings From Life by Jacinto Guevara
Dock Space Gallery is proud to present an exhibition featuring the work of Los Angeles-born artist Jacinto Guevara, whose paintings capture the atmosphere, spirit, and evolving identity of urban life through deeply personal and evocative imagery.
Born in 1956, Guevara has pursued drawing and painting with relentless dedication since the age of six. Inspired in the early 1970s by the passion and iconography of the Xicano Movement, as well as the monumental influence of the Mexican muralists of the 1920s and 1930s, he developed a visual language rooted in culture, community, and social memory.
In 1986, Guevara began his celebrated Urban Landscape series — plein air paintings documenting the disappearing neighborhoods of Los Angeles. These works serve not only as records of changing cityscapes, but as emotional portraits of place and time. Alongside his visual art practice, Guevara is also an accomplished musician and composer, performing on diatonic accordion, organ, piano, bajo sexto, tenor banjo, and Andean quena.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1988, Guevara’s work has been widely recognized for its authenticity, craftsmanship, and emotional resonance. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1990 with a landmark group exhibition alongside four prominent Xicano artists. His artwork is now included in the permanent collections of UTSA, the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Public Library, and The Cheech in Riverside, California.
Reflecting on his work, Guevara states:
“I seek to create ambiente (atmosphere) and I use place, detail and randomness to awaken the past dreams and memories in the viewer.”
This exhibition at Lone Gallery invites audiences into Guevara’s richly textured world — where memory, architecture, culture, and everyday life merge into paintings filled with warmth, nostalgia, and humanity.
