East Meets West: "Cowboys & Indians" Musical

Singer-songwriter Bob Livingston (of Lost Gonzo Band fame) has created a unique musical presentation that combines American cowboy/folk music with music and dance of India.  The IFCC is proud to present Livingston and his band as they delight us with the fusion of East and West.

A free, official Tricentennial event, we can welcome 200 guests for this outstanding musical presentation in the International Folk Culture Center at Our Lady of the Lake University.

“Livingston got the idea for the group while he was in India for a U.S. State Department cultural exchange tour. Local musicians, using their indigenous instruments, sat in almost every night. Everyone mixed themes, influences, rhythms, instrumentation, and insights from both East and West. They played songs & yodels from Texas and ragas & chants from India. A newspaper in New Delhi called it “country ‘n eastern music” and “the Wild East!”

Inspired by these experiences, Livingston wanted to take the sounds and charm of the Indian shows back to Texas. He got together with an old songwriting friend, Bobby Bridger and they wrote new songs and tossed around ideas for a show in Texas schools and theaters. The concept for COWBOYS & INDIANS began to take shape and some great musicians, drawn from the vibrant Austin international musical community, joined up.”

After the musical, on the following day Saturday August 25, Navrus School of Performing Arts will travel from Austin, Texas to celebrate the Tricentennial by presenting an afternoon of dance workshops featuring six different styles of dance from India:  Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood, Contemporary, Bhangra and Bengali.  The workshop is also on Eventbrite: https://tricentennialdanceofindia.eventbrite.com
