Metal Mayhem

The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures and South Texas Museum of Popular Culture (TexPop) have collaborated to produce an exhibit documenting San Antonio’s lauded heavy metal era from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

The exhibit showcases photos, art and album covers, LPs, cassettes and more. Areas of the exhibit pay tribute to people, bands and events that defined San Antonio’s heavy metal era: “The Godfather” Joe Anthony of KMAC radio, credited as the radio DJ who built San Antonio’s metal community; Jack Orbin, who founded Stone City Attractions, the promotional company that brought Rush, Judas Priest and other big names to town; and the legendary “Slayer vs. Slayer” battle of the bands, with the Los Angeles and San Antonio bands competing for the name; plus other San Antonio metal bands and more.
