Modern man’s continued fascination with portals in literature, science fiction, and scientific experiments makes them a part of our common reality. Mexica shamans knew when eclipses were coming and the phenomenon was called Tonatiuh Cualo “when the sun is eaten” by the goddess Tlaltecuhtli. In ancient times prayers and offerings to Tlaltecuhtli were made as part of ceremonies before battles and for women during difficult childbirths. The path of this event on April 8th, 2024 will not only bisect the country but Texas as well. We believe this is a cosmic commentary to contemporary events in Texas. In observance of this particular Tonatiuh Cualo two portal installation events are planned that will open a metaphoric trans-dimensional bridge through ceremony and interactive performance with the community. One portal at Sala Diaz near the San Antonio River on April 6th 2024 and one along the Guadalupe River on the day of the eclipse-April 8th 2024.
The Sala Diaz Portal Event on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 will feature performances by Amalia L. Ortiz— Canción Cannibal Cabaret, Anthony "The Poet'' Flores, Brandy González, Juan C. Escobedo, Luis Valderas and Kim Bishop y El Grupo Estudiantil de TSI—UTSA PaCE Dept. There will be a MASAporte Naturalization Station on location representing a cosmic port of entry. All that approach the port wearing their Cosmic Couture will be issued a MASAporte. Photographs from the cosmic naturalization event will become part of the Cosmic Couture Portrait Collection. The portrait collection is growing with each new location that the MASAporte Naturalization Station lands and this will be its third iteration. Film footage from the event night will be collected to be used in the art film that will combine footage of both cosmic portal ceremonies/performances/installations.
