Rainbow Eyes

Gnehm’s colorful/fluorescent figure paintings draw inspiration from the synthesis of art history, contemporary media, and the female Muse. Each painting starts as a college of these ideas than by using many layers of paint she aims to explore this relationship further. She layers the neutral tones of oil over the bright artificial colors of the acrylic, which creates the translucent nature of the skin. These paintings interweave female forms (past and present) by overlaying imagery and texture using traditional and experimental painting techniques. Gnehm draws inspiration from the art in museums depicting royalty, mythology, and the female Muse. She is also interested in the portrayal of women in contemporary culture and media. Through the complex history of figurative oil painting, these intricate paintings create new portraits from the pieced-together images.
