The Sacred Art of Altars is the 16th annual exhibit and auction. This powerful exhibit features a dazzling display of contrasts in variety as well a beautiful underlying unity. The Sacred Art of Altars is the 16th annual exhibit and auction. This powerful exhibit features a dazzling display of contrasts in variety as well a beautiful underlying unity. Each piece has an identical shape and size (10” x 14”) while each shrine exhibits its own uniqueness in an eye-popping array of colors and media, including paint, wax, glass, metal, fabric, ceramics and more. And the subject matter ranges from sublime to temporal, and from spiritual to satirical.
This exhibit is a reflection of the growing popularity of “nichos” or small, personalized shrines, in the popular culture of the Southwest and Latin America. The artistry of “nichos” or small shrines has long been an integral part of San Antonio’s rich cultural heritage. But altars are becoming increasingly evident in art galleries, museums, homes and businesses alike, a fact which is underscored by the diverse, creative artistry evident here.
Over 50 of San Antonio’s most creative artists (see List of Featured Artists below) have created and donated their work for this exhibit and silent auction. Proceeds benefit the Celebration Circle of San Antonio, a 501 (c)(3) interfaith community whose creative, inclusive approach to spirituality is perfectly embodied in this exhibition. This marks the 16th year that this successful, wide-ranging exhibit has been held.
However, due to the pandemic we had to postpone the exhibit and silent auction that was scheduled in March. Now our exhibit and auction will be a 100% virtual event showcasing 55 altars available for online bidding from Friday, September 18, 7:00PM CT with a Kick Off Hour from 7:00 – 8:00PM CT through the Grand Finale Closing & Final Bidding on Friday, October 9, 7:00 – 8:00PM CT.
