Calligraphy, a visual art form related to writing, is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument, brush, or other writing instrument. A contemporary calligraphic practice, as defined by Claude Mediaville (1996), is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner.” In contemporary practice, these signs can range from elegant, legible lettering to the unreadable mark.
The San Antonio Calligraphers’ Guild (SACG) is an enthusiastic and open group dedicated to learning and sharing the art of calligraphy. From historic manuscripts to contemporary creations, its common bond is the love of art forms that use lettering for artistic expression. The Guild was founded in 1976. In addition to providing calligraphers and the public with educational and vocational information we also engage in charitable, literary, and social activities that reflect the purpose of the Guild. The SACG has been providing activities and learning for over 40 years! The Guild welcomes new members and invites guests to visit their website at www.sanantonicalligraphy.com.
