Sosa x 2: Kathy Sosa and Lionel Sosa Explore Identity and Visibility

San Antonio, Texas — [May 9th, 2026 ] — Sosa x 2 brings together artists Kathy Sosa and Lionel Sosa in a compelling joint exhibition that examines identity, cultural memory, and the lives of those who often exist beyond visibility. Presented at Dock Space Gallery and Lone Star Gallery, the exhibition reveals stories shaped by resilience, heritage, and the complexities of belonging through vivid portraiture and deeply personal visual language.

A centerpiece of the exhibition is Kathy Sosa’s ZAPATISTA (30″ x 30″, oil on canvas, $7,500). The work features a masked female figure, her gaze steady and direct, partially concealed by a red bandana. Framed by symbolic patterning, the composition evokes themes of protection, resistance, and cultural identity. Sosa’s use of bold color and stylized form transforms the figure into both an individual and an icon.

In contrast, Lionel Sosa’s Poet (48” x 60”, $20,000) offers an unflinching, intimate portrait rendered with expressive, layered brushwork. The close-cropped face reveals every line and texture, emphasizing raw humanity and presence. Part of a broader series honoring “unsung heroes,” the work reflects on individuals whose stories often remain unseen due to immigration status, giving visibility to lives often overlooked.

Sosa x 2 challenges viewers to reconsider not only how we see others, but who is allowed to be seen.

The exhibition will include additional works by both artists, further expanding on themes of identity, social consciousness, and lived experience.

About Kathy Sosa

In 2007 Sosa began to explore the artistic expression of mestisaje, the blending of peoples, races, ethnicities, languages, ideas, habits and cultures that characterizes the Texas-Mexico border region that has been her home since childhood. She received national recognition for the result of that passion, the traveling exhibition “Huipiles: a Celebration,” which debuted at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. as part of the Smithsonian Latino Center’s 2007 summer season “Mexico at the Smithsonian” before traveling to the Museo Alameda in San Antonio in 2008. 2009 saw Sosa’s one woman show at San Antonio’s Blue Star Contemporary Art Space. Her work has been featured on CNN, in FiberArts, Skirt!, San Antonio Woman, Country Lifestyle, Destinations, and is available in San Antonio through AnArte Gallery.

About Lionel Sosa
Lionel Sosa is a nationally recognized portrait artist, author, and marketing consultant, and founder of one of the largest Hispanic advertising agencies in the United States. Named one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America,” he has advised multiple U.S. presidential campaigns and is widely recognized for his expertise in Hispanic consumer and voter behavior.

His portrait work has been exhibited at institutions including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library, and Texas A&M University. His current series focuses on elevating the stories of individuals whose lives often remain invisible.
